Thanksgiving Desserts

So I am hacking into my mother’s blog to ask if anyone has any good ideas for a really fun creative dessert to bring to Thanksgiving with my husband’s family…….FYI they don’t serve turkey they serve lobster.

thanks,

The Daughter

It’s me, JOAN

OMG, I just nearly went nuts. I saw this post but only the title and the date and I’m thinking–That’s it, I’ve finally gone off the deep end. I wrote a post today and don’t remember doing it.

Then I start to read it and I’m wondering why I’m writing about my mother–she’s dead and never ever made desserts when she was alive.

I’m glad to know Sarah is asking for recipes because at least I know I’m not totally whacked. I don’t mind if I can’t remember yesterday but not remembering today would be creepy.

Oh, give her some recipes and make them difficult. I’m not making dessert. Love you Sarah

Do you want recipes or just suggestions? How about pumpkin cheesecake or tiramisu?

I was going to suggest what birdpress has already done. TIRAMISU always does the trick! Being 100% Italian, I grew up on it. DELICIOUS! Ciiao, and good luck! 🙂 Joan, hang in there! LOL

You could stick with the seafood idea and do some fruit sushi! Just google fruit sushi and you will find lots of fun and sweet treats that look like real sushi! 🙂

A buttery apple pie sounds awesome (and it’s one of my least fave to make. huh) I’d also vote for pumpkin cheesecake – which would be purchased! I won’t even attempt read cheesecake. I’m strange like that.

I was looking for something different as well for this year. I came across this recipe for Eggnog Cheesecake at Allrecipes.com ( http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Eggnog-Cheesecake-III/Detail.aspx )

    Ingredients:
    1 cup graham cracker crumbs
    2 tablespoons white sugar
    3 tablespoons melted butter

3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese,
    softened 1 cup white sugar
    3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    3/4 cup eggnog
    2 eggs
    2 tablespoons rum
    1 pinch ground nutmeg

    Directions:
    1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
    2. In a medium bowl combine graham cracker crumbs, 2 tablespoons sugar and butter. Press into the bottom of a 9 inch spring form pan.
    3. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Place on a wire rack to cool.
    4. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
    5. In a food processor combine cream cheese, 1 cup sugar, flour and eggnog; process until smooth. Blend in eggs, rum and nutmeg. Pour mixture into cooled crust.
    6. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes.
    7. Reduce heat to 250 and bake for 45 minutes, or until center of cake is barely firm to the touch. Remove from the oven and immediately loosen cake from rim. Let cake cool completely before removing the rim.

I’ve never heard of anyone serving lobster at Thanksgiving! So with that in mind, pumpkin anything just doesn’t sound right. I myself would go with a key lime pie thing.
Joan, if you’re part of this meal, I know an easy recipe that’s not too high in calories. Two 8 oz containers of key lime yogurt (lite or otherwise), and a small container of low fat whip cream. Fold together and fill a store bought graham cracker crust. Place in the freezer and remove about a half hour before serving. It’s really not too bad!

I love the idea of lobster at Thanksgiving! So that means dessert has to be tangy rather than over-the-top rich or chocolate. I’d suggest Cranberry Nut Pie — http://bakingfamily.wordpress.com/2009/10/22/cranberry-nut-pie/ — which is also subversive in that it is not “Thanksgiving colored,” meaning beige.

I love ambrosia. Don’t know if it would go with lobster, but it’s yummy.

Oh and too funny with thinking you had lost the plot Joan.

That would have been quite a moment.

Okay. I hope this comes out in the blog…my memories of the best Thanksgiving dessert ever is made by your Mom. Nothing compares in my book. It is Zebra Cake. I remember your Mom bringing it the first time, I believe to Nana and Grandpa’s, and I was all excited to see it (looks great). I got my first piece and it was so good that I went up for another, but it was ALL GONE. I think people even scooped off the tin foil. Your Mom had to increase it to two cakes eventually and no one could touch it till after dinner or it would not have made it to dessert time. The other thing your Mom makes and there are many recipes out there for it, but your Mom’s are the best, are Magic Cookie bars. They are very sweet, so you cannot really eat more than one, so they maynot go as quickly.

I realize I did not write “Why” Zebra Cake is so cool. First of all it looks like the person who made it took days, not just the traditional hours, to make it. In reality it is the fastest dessert you will ever make in minutes. When cut it looks just like a Zebra (stripes) and leaves people wondering; how did she do that?? The taste is amazing and it is not all that fattening, even if you use all full fat ingredients. I never got the “look” down like Joannie’s, mine always looked much smaller while hers always came out big and fluffy. She must have a trick. HMMMM….

It’s me Lisa, Auntie Joan. I still consider myself your aunt even though Barry and I are divorced but everyone knows he and I are best friends.
Thanks so much for the compliments. Zebra Cake has always been a go to dessert for me and I don’t know why I didn’t think of it.

I really miss the big dinners we would have at Nana & Grampa’s house. Those are some of the best times of my life. I’m sure you know how much I love your whole family.

I wish you, Roger and Lindsey would come visit us. Lilah would love to meet her cousins..

      Love, Joan

Having seen the lovely fruit sushi on Facebook, I know how this turned out. I hope it’s a hit with the Thanksgiving lobster feast (YUMMM!). It was kinda comical how the daughter hacked into your blog Joan. And your trying to figure out how that post got there 🙂

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Lobster for Thanksgiving would be wonderful if it were served with a side of turkey. I really MUST have turkey for Thanksgiving.

Love the photo here. Is that you in your bikini wearing days? Yeah, I used to look fab in one as well. I’ve not even put on a swimming suit for YEARS!

Oh, how funny she did this to you … my friends were just laughing about doing something similar to one another on Facebook.

I finally am doing a recipe post tomorrow from your email you sent to me like a million weeks ago with the recipe chain. I’ll link here so Sarah can read and make my yummy black bean and corn salsa. Cheap and easy.
