Silas is now almost 3 weeks old. He is such a sweetheart. Unfortunately he has GBS~~Grunting Baby Syndrome. When I say “unfortunately” I mean for us. We had noticed (hard to miss) that he grunted all the time. It sounded like he was constipated though he is far from constipated. He poops like a trooper.
“The baby with grunting baby syndrome will push, squeeze, grunt, change color and carry on only to produce a soft bowel movement. Parents will report that their baby is constipated and seek help. Very often we’re lead down the primrose path searching for a solution. But there is no problem. The grunting baby’s problem is one of primitive in-coordination. While we all take for granted our understanding of the need for simultaneous relaxation of the pelvic floor and abdominal pressure to poop, not all babies have this figured out. And it’s this lack of coordination that makes us believe that our babies are in trouble.”
Silas is the noisiest baby I have ever seen. It is actually very funny to watch him grunt, groan and turn red. He makes these amazingly crazy faces while he is doing it. He also does it through the night when he is sleeping. Needless to say, I don’t get much sleep because he is in my room at night. Sarah has to go back to work and she needs her sleep so the little noise maker bunks with me.
Here are a couple of photos of him while being Grunt Boy.
This is a Non Grunt photo just to show that he doesn’t grunt all of the time.
According to what I have read he should be over this by the time he is 8 – 12 weeks old. I sure hope so.

Oh, that must be tough for the little guy, and for all of you (I know what it’s like to see your baby in pain and not be able to help … Ethan had severe reflux and would scream during/after feeding because of the acid burning his throat). I hope he grows out of it soon. I do love the photos!

From what I have read they aren’t in pain. They just haven’t figured out how to poop correctly so they do a lot of grunting and groaning when they don’t have to. I would feel so much worse if I thought the little thing was in pain but he seems content even when he is grunting.

Your pooper trooper is just adorable. I’m glad his GBS is nothing to worry about. Perversely, I’d like to see a video of him in action. So cute!

He is the cutest little sweet pea, ever! Congratulations, Joan! And I don’t know anyone other than you that could write such a humorous post about the noises babies make when they are um, digesting. LOL. Adding you to my new blogroll and going to see your new site too!
