Interruptions! Peace and Quiet Or The Lack There Of!

First I lived with my parents.  Then I got married and lived with the husband and two kids.  Then I got divorced and lived without the wasband and the two kids.   My daughter went out on her own and I lived alone with my son.  Then my son spent a few winters away from home and I lived a solitary life (peaceful and quiet)  though I still worked.  Then I stopped working and my daughter and her husband moved in. It was still relatively quiet because they worked a lot.  Then the wasband moved in who only works about 4 days a month though he does a lot of bird watching and now has a girlfriend to occupy some of his time but certainly not all.  Now the son is back home for just a while, two weeks so far.

All my peace and quiet (and computer time) has gone down the drain.  The funny thing is I can’t decide whether I love it or hate it.  I sort of like the hustle and bustle of family life.  Then on the other hand I sort of don’t.  With family life comes family drama like on TV.  You know, those family dramas.  There are the old ones I remember like Dallas, Falcon Crest, Family and the Waltons.

“Family” 1976

I’m thinking we have our drama here but lately it’s becoming more a comedy of errors.

Definition of “Comedy of Errors” by Wikipedia:

“A comedy of errors is dramatic work (often a play) that is light and often humorous or satirical in tone, in which the action usually features a series of comic instances of mistaken identity, and which typically culminates in a happy resolution of the thematic conflict.

A slight variation of the “Comedy of Errors” discipline is Farcical theater, which revolves around humor caused by the foolish mistakes of unintelligent characters and the chaos that derives from it. Examples of farcical comedies include Fawlty Towers and Men Behaving Badly – Both from British Sitcom.”

I’m thinking I’m living more of a farcical theater comedy especially “Men Behaving Badly”.  Now Barry plays solitaire on the computer quite often and don’t say you don’t,  mister.  I know you’re reading this.  So I am typing the symptoms of Solitaire addiction for you. (I wouldn’t bother doing this if you used a deck of cards.)  You might possibly need to go to some SA (Solitaire Anonymous) meetings. (I just want the computer).

Symptoms of Solitaire Addiction

Signs of an addiction to solitaire are similar to those associated with computer addiction. Warning signs to look for include:

  • Getting a “rush” when playing the game
  • Feeling guilty about playing the game, even as you continue to play
  • Not being able to control the amount of time you spend playing solitaire
  • Lying about the amount of time you spend playing and thinking about the game
  • Becoming upset when someone or something in real life interrupts your game playing time
  • Playing solitaire when you are sad or upset to avoid dealing with your feelings

In addition to the symptoms named above, physical warning signs can also be evident:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Reoccurring head and backaches
  • Dry eyes
  • Trouble staying on a regular eating schedule
  • Neglect of personal hygiene

Now I myself don’t have an addiction to my computer.  Oh,  BTW (notice my use of acronyms),  this is what I want for Christmas.

In 2005, North Carolina State Senator Austin Allran proposed anti-solitaire legislation. He wanted to erase all games, especially solitaire, from all computers in state use. Allran felt that government employees were spending too much time being idle and wasting taxpayer’s money. He believed that millions would be gained in increased worker productivity. On a similar note, New York City Mayor Bloomberg  fired a city employee for playing solitaire during work hours.

Sorry the computer has been too busy for me to get time to visit your blogs but I will remedy that soon, somehow.

OMG! My first time being the first to comment EVER! Now I’ve forgotten what I wanted to say, lol.

So hear what you are saying here, Joan. My parents used to talk about this when us adult kids came to stay. You love having them there, but you have your own routine (which they mess up with) that you love.

Family! OMG, I totally forgot about that programme.

Congratulations on being the first to comment!!! It’s a love/hate relationship. I love having my son and the rest of them around but I don’t like my routine messed up. I think a new laptop would settle the whole problem. I always used to watch “Family”.

I say soak up the hustle and bustle, all your friends will still be here, but damn that toilet/computer combo could be great for multi-tasking…..hmm…do you think my blog would be a good one to read in the bathroom? Hahahaha… 🙂

I think you definitely have a bathroom blog. I think laughing helps any bathroom problems you might have. Gets things moving if you know what I mean. They sure do keep me busy with cooking. I made spaghetti and meatballs last night (from scratch). There were 17 meatballs. I counted them so I could figure out the WW points. Sarah’s hubby ate 8 of them. He is very thin. If I ate 8 meatballs I would gain 5 pounds in one night.

Wasband, that’s pretty good. On the other hand I never heard about a wasband who does birdwatching while you cook for his girlfriend. Might be a correlation with you losing your memory. Possibly a bird flu. In any case I would advise to force your wasband to take a shower before you all sit down for oatmeal.
    Regards

    frank

Welcome Frank!! My wasband and I have been divorced for 20 years but are best friends. I’ve always been great friends with his 3 girlfriends. (he didn’t have them all at the same time). His current girlfriend is my favorite so far. He’s got her addicted to computer solitaire too. Actually, I haven’t had to cook for this girlfriend. She’s a vegetarian and usually brings her own food when she stays over because we are all meat eaters. Well, now I have an excuse for my bad memory–bird flu. Sounds better than elderly person. 😉

I love it when a family gathers together, but when there’s so much chaos, one can get too cranky. Enjoy the family for now, you might miss them again soon, who knows. So enjoy them while they’re around!

You are right Sheng. We are not always together like this very often because Damon travels around so much. I’ve really enjoyed having him around. I’ll miss him so much when he leaves. I will take your advice.

It sounds like you need another computer in the house, Joan! I sure hope you get some more online time soon. It’s great having a busy & full house, but every girl needs her peace and her own space … and for you, that’s bloggin! Would be for me, too 😉

I totally agree. That is the answer to my whole dilemma. With a laptop I could hide out in my bedroom for a few hours a day. I will just have to start saving my pennies.

I watched Family too, but I really hated it! Sada Thompson was such a depressing mother, Meredith Baxter was so conceited, and Willy? Who the hell quits high school to become a writer!!?? There’s this thing called life and college that just might come in useful someday, for God’s sake! Love your header. To this day I still say, “I’d like some peace and piet.” Yes, piet, because that’s what Baby Girl (now 20) used to yell at night if she felt someone was disturbing her sleep. Now that all my kids are out of the house, I truly enjoy my solitude so I know where you’re coming from.

Sada was depressing wasn’t she? She never seemed to have fun. I love the “piet”. I think I will start saying that just to see how everyone responds. Solitude is wonderful, isn’t it? “Piet” Everyone!! 🙂

I giggled my way through the entire thing. As for solitaire addiction, I can’t imagine such a thing! I’ve never stayed up later and later, saying to myself that I have to play just one more game “’til I win”. I’ve never gone brain-dead, yet, like an automaton keep sliding those red nines on the black tens; no, not me!!!
(But, I always used my own computer, though.)
I loved the meez with the laptop in the forest. Nice. And that toilet thing, truly scary. 😮

Ha! Ha! I think we have another candidate for SA. My meez is just chillin’ in the woods all by herself. That toilet thing might be taking things a little too far. I say might because I sort of want one.

HAH! I love the bathroom computer. That seat looks so comfy! I miss reading your blog! Tell the Wasband that your fans are going to end up at his door in mob form (pitchforks, torches, shaking of fists) if he doesn’t seek help for his addiction. Miss ya Joan!

I’ll tell the wasband that you are all coming to get him if he doesn’t get me a laptop somehow. He’s gone for a few days so I have been playing catch up all day.

what is quiet? I have an ISband, a 21 year old (today) and 17 year old, 6 parrots, 1 dog, 5 cats, 1 snake …there is no quiet.
I want to place an order for one of those toilet seats even though living in a twister magnet that might as well be sitting out in the friggin living room. I need to scroll back up but did I see a dinner tray anywhere in that set up ..cuz if not I’m going to have to modify it a bit.

..onto the game addiction. I HATE being at work in the middle of a good game of spyder and the boss comes lurking around. WTH? Doesn’t he have better things to be doing than to be lurking around? I don’t know who he thinks he is..but I hate having to minimize knowing I’m winning a game and chewing off nails until he vacates my area so I can resume.

OH an oh my gosh I watched Family ..that was like something I HAD to do ..but now as I’m thinking about it and things being brought up by other posters…that mom was a drip. The oldest was a beyotch and willy was a friggin moron. No wonder Buddy was always messed up. (ok I’m sure the fact that they called her Buddy didn’t help matters)

so the two tv moms who I frankly couldn’t live with…Bonnie Franklin on One Day at a Time and Sada from Family. One was too bubbly and stupid and the other flatlined and was no fun.

I agree with you about those two TV moms. They weren’t the best. I loved the mom from “Father Knows Best”. Though “Leave it To Beaver’s” mom drove me nuts for some reason.

I always watched “Family” anyway even though they were all f***** up.

It doesn’t sound like a lot of peace and quiet at your house either. But that’s family life and I really wouldn’t trade it.

I had a boss who made me delete all of the games off of the office computers except for hers! Being the smart one in the office I new how to link into her computer from mine and play solitare. I guess that would make me an addict! 🙂

Ha! Ha! Good for you. If she could play you should too.

I was so happy to see this from you today. I really miss you when your not around. I can so relate to you with the stupid solitaire playing. My husband practically knocks me out of the way to play the second he thinks I’m getting up! I did have to buy a laptop almost a year ago now. The weekends were just killing us and it’s so much better this way. I don’t go to my room but at least we can both do what we want to do “when” we want to do it. I just am the type of person that can’t do the same thing like that over and over. I bore with games like that.

I went through so pretty nasty “empty nest syndrome” type things when my youngest son left for college and my oldest had already moved out. It took me almost a year to come to grips with it and before I knew it, they were both at home. I was just like you, I loved it and hated it at the same time. I was so used to them always being around and then I had no choice but to get used to them being gone. I just get used to that and then they are both back home!!!

Good luck and enjoy but just know, we miss you.

The wasband is gone for a couple of days so I am trying to catch up on reading and commenting. Thanks for missing me. I really need to get back to blogging. I miss you two.

A laptop really would solve the problem. 🙂
It IS good to see you back. Falcon’s Crest, my Mom used to watch that. With that Loerenzo Lamaz(s) guy right?

I get hooked on those games where you search for hidden objects. I could play them all day!

I love the hidden object games. I love any kind of puzzle games too.

Lorenzo Lamas was in Falcon Crest. I never missed it.

Oh too damn funny Joan. I used to love Men Behaving Badly (the British version).
My hubs has an online bingo addiction, it drives me NUTS!
I know what you mean about a love hate relationship with you family life. Sometimes I’d just like some peace and quiet….but then it feels so strange!

They drive you nuts when they are home and you miss them when they are gone. I didn’t know you could play Bingo online. I’m not telling the wasband.

LOL. Don’t tell TGH but half the time I’m wishing for the guy to be home with me to spend some quality time but then when he does take a day off (because the poor dear is sick with a cold, nonetheless) I get irritated and wish he were back at work! LOL. I think it’s more a disruption in routine that irritates me than anything else. And I love my family but they do drive me nuts. And in my family, it’s a very short drive.

I loved the sitcom “Family!” LOL

Families put the “fun” in dysfunctional, that’s what my mom likes to say. 😀

The all purpose seat is hysterical.

    Enjoy your family.
