The Entertainment Meme

I was tagged by Teeni at Vaguetarian Tea Room to do a meme. All you have to do is write a little about each of the following topics – books, television, and music. Teeni’s place is a fun place. She has the Live Poet’s Society which is great. She also has The Story Game- The Adventures of Marie Cambridge. She and whoever wants to take part, each write a paragraph of the story as it progresses and then you get to read the whole thing. With so many different versatile people writing their own take on what should happen next to Marie, you end up with a funny fascinating read.

Well here is my contribution to this meme.

BOOKS

The first series of books I ever read was The Honeybunch Books.

honeybunch01.jpg

Most of the series was written by Helen Louise Thorndyke. The Honey Bunch Series consisted of 32 titles written from from 1923 through 1955. The books were aimed at 4-8 year old girls. I probably read most of them when I was 6 or 7 years old. After reading those books I was hell bent on reading. I read every Nancy Drew book ever written along with all the Hardy Boys books. I come from a bookish family. Though I don’t think my parents ever read a novel, my siblings and I were avid readers. My brother owned a used book store for 17 years and still sells books on E-Bay and my sister is a novelist. I just read books. I don’t sell or write them. I am a big Sci Fi fan. Teeni mentioned one of her favorite books happens to be “The Stand” by Stephen King. I think it is by far the best book he has ever written and it is in my top ten. I love Anne Mccaffrey and Orson Scott Card, especially his book “Ender’s Game”. I also read non-fiction because I want to know about everything. I have dozens of astronomy books. I guess you could say I have a very eclectic collection. I also have a huge collection of cookbooks (HUGE).

bookcase1.jpgThese are the bookcases in my room which don’t include my HUGE cookbook collection which is in the living room and kitchen. This also doesn’t include the piles of books on the floor. It also doesn’t include the books stored in the attic.

bookcase2.jpg

My room has piles of books everywhere because they won’t all fit in my bookcases. My brother thinks I should sell the books I don’t look at often. I could never sell a book. I could give one away if I thought someone would benefit by it but I couldn’t sell any of my books.

MUSIC

I love music. In one of my most recent blogs I listed my favorite bands from the sixties. My love of music started when I was thirteen and started having panic attacks. The Doctor told my mother I should take a nap every day and it was summer. All the other kids were outside playing. My brother let me use his record player so I could listen to music. The only music we had in the house was his- all folk music. I listened to Bob Dylan when no one had ever heard of him, Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, Ramblin Jack Elliot, Dave Van Ronk and Joan Baez.

200px-bobdylanbobdylan.jpgBob Dylan’s first album. He only wrote two songs on it and it only sold about 2500 copies in the US.

This is the album that made him famous. He wrote all but two of the of the songs. It includes his famous “Blowin in the Wind”.

200px-the_freewheelin_bob_dylan.jpg

My brother taught both my sister and I to play acoustic guitar. My brother took guitar lessons until the teacher couldn’t teach him anything else. There was nothing left to learn. My brother even sang live on a local radio show once. The station didn’t have a wide listening area so my Mom and Dad took us to the radio tower for the station so we wouldn’t miss his song.
My music tastes now range from opera, classical, classic rock, jazz, new age, reggae, world music and new stuff that my kids introduce me too. Again I have a broad range of taste when it comes to music. Right now I am listening to the Bulgarian State Women’s Choir.

TELEVISION

I used to be a couch potato until about a year ago when getting pneumonia changed my life. Walking Being wheelchaired out of the hospital I swore I would make a change in my life and if you have been reading my posts you will know that I am trying. I used to watch anything and everything. It really didn’t matter to me what was on (except for cartoons). Now I limit myself to a few shows a week. I like Top Chef, Hell’s Kitchen and American Idol as far as reality shows go. I like Lost, Jericho and Prison Break as far as TV series go. I do watch The History channel and PBS if there is anything on that interests me. When I first retired, I had the TV on from the time I got up until I went to bed. Now I might watch it for two hours a day. That’s a great leap for me. We also rent the occasional movie from Netflix. Now my life is too busy for television. Also I spend way too much time blogging. Who has time for TV? Some of my old favorites were King of Queens, Taxi, Route 66 (that goes back to being a kid). My daughter and I used to watch 90210, Dawson’s Creek, and Roswell together.

I do watch the Sci Fi channel if there is anything good on like a good mini series. I watched “Taken”, “Dune” and “Children of Dune”. Those are my favorites. Most of the movies on Sci Fi are absolutely stupid and unwatchable.

Well, That’s my contribution to this meme.

I guess I’m supposed to tag some people. I will do that but if you don’t want to participate then don’t. But it is a good meme to get to know people which is why I took part in it .

    Wow – You certainly DO have a lot of books, Ms. Joan! I definitely picked the right person for this meme! LOL. You are the second person to mention Ender’s Game so I think I need to get myself right out there and get a hold of that book. That is so cool that you knew who Bob Dylan was probably before everyone else did. And I’m so glad you are no longer a couch potato. Hey, some TV is good (you know, in between blogging, LOL) but life is to be experienced, right? Plus, it gives you lots of fodder to blog about! Thanks so much for participating in this. I really enjoyed reading your responses! 🙂 Oh, and thanks so much for all the kind words and links! You made my day!

    I’m envious of your books, because when we moved I had to get rid of most of mine. I had hundreds of them, like you. I love cookbooks, I love reading them, and I have some that I’ve never even made a single recipe from.

    I like the idea of Teeni’s Story Game. I’m going to go read it.

    P.S. I hate Bob Dylan. He blows, and not in the wind.

    How come you and Barbara don’t get a gig playing guitar down at the Irish Pub?

    I think we both forgot how to play. She had a good voice. I could never carry a tune. But we used to have fun playing. I like the old Bob Dylan, probably because it brings back memories. The Bob Dylan of today is very strange.

    I have many cookbooks I have never cooked a recipe from but I still love them. I am very interested in reading about cooking during the Roman times and Medieval times. There are a few books I want to buy to add to my collection. But now I’m smart. I get them from the library first if I can, and then decide whether to buy them or not.

    @ Teeni
    Orson Scott Card who wrote Ender’s game wrote a whole series about Ender. Ender’s game is the first book in the series. Even my sister who doesn’t like sci fi, read it and loved it.

    What’s your favorite cookbook?? I still haven’t put AIM on my computer yet. I had to take my older brother shopping. He doesn’t have a car so I take him once a week to do his errands. I will do it though!!

    OK well I do appreciate the very polite, no pressure tag, so thank you joanharvest. 🙂 I’ll see what I can do. I have a busy travel weekend coming up so I may not get enough webtime. I bet running your store really helped with that cookbook collection, huh? And I spy all the field guides – our bookshelves look similar!

    This was a great meme because I got to learn so much about you! Just staring at your book-shelves gave me tingles inside! (not the inappropriate kind (LOL), just the fascinated kind 😉 )

    PS: Lost and Prison Break…ohhh yeah, and when I get home from work every evening (almost every evening, LOL) I hop on the exercise bike and do half an hour with King of Queens on TV 😉

    It’s definitely a no pressure tag. There is no time limit. But I would be interested in what you read, your music tastes and your TV habits. I have a feeling we have similar tastes.

    Yes, we sold a lot of cookbooks and it seemed I always had to have a copy of everything for myself. I am also interested in the history of cooking. If I can’t eat it at least I can read about it.

    Have a good weekend.

    @Romi

    I am laughing at your tingles. I glad you tingle over my book collection. Actually I do to. I love books. I have seen every episode of King of Queens at least three times.

    @Leafprobably

    I cook a lot because of weight watchers. I would love to bake but I probably wouldn’t be able to eat anything I bake because I’d never lose weight. In the fall during apple season I found a weight watchers recipe for some kind of apple thing and I made it four times in two weeks. I didn’t want to waste all the apples my wasband had picked for me up north. Fortunately, I could have one serving, which was fairly large for a weight watcher recipe, every night. Actually, I think I’ll buy some apples and make it this weekend.

    Oh, confession time…90210 was my most favourite programme ever! I still watch the reruns occasionally 🙂
    I love your book section. My daughter is into Trixie Belden, we had to spend a small fortune on the last few they are very rare. We might try Nancy Drew next! Those Honey Bunch books look SO sweet!
    I like Bob Dylan, hubby thinks he is awful, lol.

    Thank you for stopping by. My daughter and I loved 90210. She was at the perfect age to watch it with me so we had many discussions about the characters.
    I actually bought a Honey Bunch book on E-Bay recently just to have one. I still call my daughter Honey Bunch and my son Sweet Pea.

    @CuriousC
    Well, I don’t know how fascinating I am but I am really happy to know you to. Blogging is the perfect way for me to meet people because I don’t get out that much.

    Your memory sounds like mine. With this meme you don’t even have to write any particulars, like names of books or TV shows, you can just generalize about the types of things you like.

    @Lucky

    It doesn’t hurt to have a brother who owned a used bookstore for 17 years. Though I have bought most of my books and he would love to raid my bookshelves too. My sister is the same way. She probably has even more books than me. I don’t know why all three of us ended up to be book freaks. I finally ordered a new T-shirt yesterday. It’s the first thing I’ve ordered for myself in a year that wasn’t a book.
