The Entertainment Meme

I was tagged by Teeni at Vaguetarian Tea Room to do a meme. All you have to do is write a little about each of the following topics – books, television, and music. Teeni’s place is a fun place. She has the Live Poet’s Society which is great. She also has The Story Game- The Adventures of Marie Cambridge. She and whoever wants to take part, each write a paragraph of the story as it progresses and then you get to read the whole thing. With so many different versatile people writing their own take on what should happen next to Marie, you end up with a funny fascinating read.

Well here is my contribution to this meme.

BOOKS

The first series of books I ever read was The Honeybunch Books.

Most of the series was written by Helen Louise Thorndyke. The Honey Bunch Series consisted of 32 titles written from from 1923 through 1955. The books were aimed at 4-8 year old girls. I probably read most of them when I was 6 or 7 years old. After reading those books I was hell bent on reading. I read every Nancy Drew book ever written along with all the Hardy Boys books. I come from a bookish family. Though I don’t think my parents ever read a novel, my siblings and I were avid readers. My brother owned a used book store for 17 years and still sells books on E-Bay and my sister is a novelist. I just read books. I don’t sell or write them. I am a big Sci Fi fan. Teeni mentioned one of her favorite books happens to be “The Stand” by Stephen King. I think it is by far the best book he has ever written and it is in my top ten. I love Anne Mccaffrey and Orson Scott Card, especially his book “Ender’s Game”. I also read non-fiction because I want to know about everything. I have dozens of astronomy books. I guess you could say I have a very eclectic collection. I also have a huge collection of cookbooks (HUGE).

These are the bookcases in my room which don’t include my HUGE cookbook collection which is in the living room and kitchen. This also doesn’t include the piles of books on the floor. It also doesn’t include the books stored in the attic.

My room has piles of books everywhere because they won’t all fit in my bookcases. My brother thinks I should sell the books I don’t look at often. I could never sell a book. I could give one away if I thought someone would benefit by it but I couldn’t sell any of my books.

MUSIC

I love music. In one of my most recent blogs I listed my favorite bands from the sixties. My love of music started when I was thirteen and started having panic attacks. The Doctor told my mother I should take a nap every day and it was summer. All the other kids were outside playing. My brother let me use his record player so I could listen to music. The only music we had in the house was his- all folk music. I listened to Bob Dylan when no one had ever heard of him, Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, Ramblin Jack Elliot, Dave Van Ronk and Joan Baez.

Bob Dylan’s first album. He only wrote two songs on it and it only sold about 2500 copies in the US.

This is the album that made him famous. He wrote all but two of the of the songs. It includes his famous “Blowin in the Wind”.

My brother taught both my sister and I to play acoustic guitar. My brother took guitar lessons until the teacher couldn’t teach him anything else. There was nothing left to learn. My brother even sang live on a local radio show once. The station didn’t have a wide listening area so my Mom and Dad took us to the radio tower for the station so we wouldn’t miss his song.
My music tastes now range from opera, classical, classic rock, jazz, new age, reggae, world music and new stuff that my kids introduce me too. Again I have a broad range of taste when it comes to music. Right now I am listening to the Bulgarian State Women’s Choir.

TELEVISION

I used to be a couch potato until about a year ago when getting pneumonia changed my life. Walking Being wheelchaired out of the hospital I swore I would make a change in my life and if you have been reading my posts you will know that I am trying. I used to watch anything and everything. It really didn’t matter to me what was on (except for cartoons). Now I limit myself to a few shows a week. I like Top Chef, Hell’s Kitchen and American Idol as far as reality shows go. I like Lost, Jericho and Prison Break as far as TV series go. I do watch The History channel and PBS if there is anything on that interests me. When I first retired, I had the TV on from the time I got up until I went to bed. Now I might watch it for two hours a day. That’s a great leap for me. We also rent the occasional movie from Netflix. Now my life is too busy for television. Also I spend way too much time blogging. Who has time for TV? Some of my old favorites were King of Queens, Taxi, Route 66 (that goes back to being a kid). My daughter and I used to watch 90210, Dawson’s Creek, and Roswell together.

I do watch the Sci Fi channel if there is anything good on like a good mini series. I watched “Taken”, “Dune” and “Children of Dune”. Those are my favorites. Most of the movies on Sci Fi are absolutely stupid and unwatchable.

I guess I’m supposed to tag some people. I will do that but if you don’t want to participate then don’t. But it is a good meme to get to know people which is why I took part in it .
